The Secret Garden

Hello, everyone! I was really happy to talk with some of you on the last blog entry! Please keep commenting if you have any questions you'd like to ask or if you want to introduce yourself! I will post some cool videos and other information about Lake Geneva in a week or so.

For now, though, I want to talk about "The Secret Garden" by Frances Hodgson Burnett. This is the book we're going to read together this semester.

"The Secret Garden" was one of my favorite books when I was a child. I probably read it over 10 times. I really liked reading about the house in the book, Misselthwaite Manor, which had so many different rooms - almost 100! I used to imagine what was in all the different rooms.

When I was growing up, my copy of the book had this cover.
"The Secret Garden" was written in 1910, but it is still very popular in English-speaking countries. It has been made into many different movie versions and a Broadway play! Here are some of the different versions.

"The Secret Garden" 1987, made for American TV. This has the whole movie, but it doesn't have subtitles, so it could be difficult to understand.

"The Secret Garden" 1993, feature film. This is just a short movie clip!

It's even been made into a Japanese anime called Anime Himitsu no Hanazono (アニメ ひみつの花園). You can't get this version in English. If anyone decides to watch it in Japanese, please tell me your opinion of it!

Finally, it became a Broadway musical!

If you like, watch some of these videos and see what you think! Remember, however, that the book will not be exactly the same as the movies! The movies can help you understand better or enjoy the book, but to really know the story, you must read! :)

COMMENT! - What do you think of these videos? Have you seen any of these movies or shows? What were some of your favorite books when you were a child?

This is the website for the Florida park - the Japanese park has its own website! Some of my friends went there and they really loved it! https://www.universalorlando.com/harrypotter/ Of course, England would be great to visit too! 1. Hello, Kim Song Yeon (did I spell that correctly?) How are you? My Chuseok was pretty good, thanks! I hope yours was wonderful! I'm glad you are excited by the book; I hope you will like it! Yes, I have read all of the "Twilight" books - I liked "Eclipse" the most because I was very interested in the wolf characters. What do you think of the character Jacob? I know most readers like Edward the best, but I am "Team Jacob." (In America girls say they are "Team Edward" or "Team Jacob" to say who they think Bella should be with). What about you?

      Delete
    2. I like Edward than Jacob. Although Jacob had many muscles and good acting well, but I think Edward great it than him. Also, he seems to main character.

    3. Yes, I think most "Twilight" fans agree with you, but I personally like the wolf story a lot. :)

  3. In fact, I already read "The Secret Garden" translated into Korean. I like this fairy, too. But, it is difficult for me to watch these movies(I'm not very good at English and the Japanese). Anyway, I think that the Japanese version has very different image in comparison with the Original, isn't it?
I like the fantasy world within The Silmarillion or The chronicles of Narnia. The world is full of beauty, and Good triumphs always over evil in there.

    1. Yes, I think the Japanese cartoon looks very different from the original, too, but I think that's very interesting. I really love the book "Alice in Wonderland" and it has been made into so many different kinds of movies and TV shows and even computer games. I'm always interested to see how people change it.
I never read the Silmarillion, but I also enjoyed reading the Narnia books. It has been a long time since I read them!

    2. I guess you already know " The lord of the rings. The Silmarillion is a previous work prior to The lord of the rings. However, this book published by his brother(arranged by him) after author was died. The Simarllion talk about creation of fantasy ~ the ending of "The lord of rings". It looks like bible.
l like also the mysterious world within "Alice in Wonderland"

    3. Yes! I've heard about it before! That's cool that you read it! Maybe I'll read it someday! So far my favorite Tolkien book was "The Hobbit", but my favorite movie related to his books was "Return of the King." I really like movies based on books!

      Delete
    4. I am glad you know Tolkien.
"The Hobbit" is also a part of Tolkien's world. He wrote many manuscripts, but he only published "Hobbit", "The lord of the rings", "The Adventures of Tom Bombadil"(about Tolkien's world) before he was died. His son, Christopher(I was wrong!) published his many manuscripts. What I'm trying to say is, if you are not interested
Tolkien's world, I don't recommend "The silmarillion"(I sad it looks like the bible. It is too dry). I want to do English well because of his works. There are still many untranslated, unissued books.

    5. I think that's a good motivation for studying English! Even when books are translated, they can be a bit different than the original. I am studying French. One of the reasons is so I can read "Madame Bovary" (one of my favorite books) in the original French. Those are interesting facts about Tolkien - I didn't know those things! Thanks for telling me about it!
