Choosing a Topic! IDEAS #1: Portland, Oregon

This week or next week you will be choosing a topic for the essay and the presentation. Because you will work on this topic for the rest of the semester, it's important to choose wisely! Choose a city you feel interested in, a city that will be fun, a city that has a lot to write about!

I'm sure you already know a lot about the Korean cities on the list, so I'm going to write a few brief introductions to world cities you might be interested in. First up, my adopted hometown -

PORTLAND, OREGON

Portland, Oregon was my home for 7 years! It's a very cool city which has attracted many young people in the last 10+ years. It's known for its eco-friendly lifestyle and biking culture. There are many great parks, gardens, and other interesting attractions in Portland!

Biking is VERY popular in Portland. This is me with my bike "Old Gray" in 2007. I'm biking on the Springwater Trail next to the river. It's safe to bike all around Portland, and there are many bike festivals and events during the year!

There is a lot of beautiful street art in Portland!
Portland has become so popular in the U.S. that there's a television comedy show "Portlandia" made about the city and the strange people who live there! The video below is a comedy song about the strange young people who live in Portland. Even though it's a comedy, the people in the video are real Portland people. I even met a few of them! Portland's city motto is: Keep Portland Weird

Portland is a very strange city, but I love it. If you have any questions about Portland, Oregon, or any of the cities on the topics list, please feel free to ask in the comments! Happy choosing!

    1. Portland is mainly famous for its lifestyle, not its attractions. It's famous for biking, microbreweries (beer), nature and eco-friendliness. Our biggest attraction is actually a bookstore - the largest independent bookstore in the U.S. It is as big as one city block and when you go in they give you a map of the bookstore, so you don't get lost!

    2. I love beer very much!!! Surely I will go to that bookstore!!

    1. Hmmm... I'm not sure about our favorite sports in Portland. We have a soccer team and a basketball team. I think the basketball team is a little more popular than the soccer team. We don't have a football or baseball team. Most people like to exercise, bike, do yoga, go running, go rowing on the river or be active in some way, however. I think doing sports is more popular than watching sports!

    1. I think the most famous places in Portland are Powell's bookstore (it's a REALLY big bookstore), the Japanese and Chinese gardens, the rose garden, and a really big park called Forest Park. As I told Lee Seung Hwan in another comment, though, we are more famous for our lifestyle!

  5. Unfortunately, I don't like riding a bike. But I really like eco-friendly environment. Is there any special wild animals or plants? I want to see many of them.

    1. In the city you can see many pigeons, wild birds, and squirrels. Squirrels are everywhere in the U.S.! Once a squirrel tried to steal my sandwich!!! In Forest Park and other wild areas you can see raccoons, deer, foxes and snakes sometimes. You can see other wild birds and water birds. Portland is a city, but in the country around Portland you can sometimes also see elk, bobcats and beavers. In terms of plants - there are many fir trees and other types of trees. We also have a famous rose garden with many varieties of roses. Most people grow gardens around their houses, too.

  6. Portland is so interesting city. I like ride a bike so sometimes I ride with my friend. I have never lived other country so I want to live with another culture. Can you recommend city in U.S.A?

    1. Well, it depends on what you are interested in. Portland is my personal favorite city because it has a lot of things I like: nature, bike-riding, vegetarian food, good movies, good books, and many interesting/strange people. However, if you like different things you might prefer a different city. There are also many bigger cities, such as New York, L.A., Chicago, San Francisco, Seattle. Also, it's important to think about the weather. Portland is cool and rainy between October and April, but in May through October it's usually warm and sunny. What is important to you in a city? What do you like to do in your free time? What kind of weather do you like? If I know about what you like, I can recommend a city more easily! :)

    1. Oh cool! Yes, I think it's good to have two hometowns, but do you miss any friends from your first hometown? It's hard to leave old friends! Portland doesn't have just one famous food - it has every kind of food you can imagine, from every country! It is known for good vegetarian food, great beers, eco-friendly food like local and organic foods, and brunch. Do you know about brunch? It's a combination of "lunch" and "breakfast" - people eat at about 11 and it's very popular in Portland. Which one is your hometown now, by the way? Seoul or Ulsan? Which do you like better, or do you like them both equally?

    1. Oh, wow! I don't even know this player, because I usually don't pay attention to sports, but I'm glad you've heard of Portland! I included some very quiet pictures of Portland. It's a smaller city than Seattle or San Francisco, but we also have a downtown area with office buildings and traffic, etc. We also have about 4-5 universities in town. Still, it's not a huge city, and I like that!

    1. Well, in the U.S. young people usually move away from home when they get to be in their late teens or early 20s. Maybe this is true in Korea too. When young people move out, they often move to a city which has similar people. In the early 2000s, many young people moved to Portland who were interested in the environment and eco-friendly things, or who were interested in art, music and culture. When many people began to move there, the newspapers and magazines talked about Portland's cool culture. Then, even more people moved to Portland who wanted to live an artistic and interesting life. This often happens in the U.S. In the 1990s it was Seattle. 10 years from now it will probably be a different city!

    1. Before I moved to Portland, I didn't have any friends who lived there, but I had a cousin who lived there. My cousin helped me. He showed me around town and introduced me to some nice people. However, I mainly moved to Portland because I knew that there was a lot of really good vegetarian food there, many movie theaters, many parks and many fun places to visit. I really loved living in Portland!
