Descriptive Paragraph 1: My Hometown

My Hometown: Lake Geneva

My hometown, Lake Geneva, is a beautiful place. Lake Geneva is in southern Wisconsin in the United States. It’s a small town with only about 5,000 residents. However, in the summer Lake Geneva is very crowded and full of tourists. People come to see our lake. The lake is very beautiful, clear and it’s fairly big. It’s a good lake for swimming, boating or doing other water sports. In the fall, winter and spring, Lake Geneva is more peaceful. It’s nice to take a walk to the lake. In the winter sometimes it is so quiet that you can hear the snow fall. I really miss my hometown!

WRITING YOUR HOMETOWN PARAGRAPH

1. Make sure to include a topic sentence. Give the name of your hometown and an honest description.
2. Make sure all the details/supporting sentences describe your hometown. Don't start to talk about your hobbies, your family or a different topic.
3. Answer some of the questions from class today (What can you do there?, What is it like in the fall? etc.)
4. Describe your hometown with adjectives.
5. Tell about what interests you. If something is interesting to you, it will probably be interesting to other people. If it bores you, it will probably bore other people.
6. REMEMBER - Don't use a translator! Your own writing is always best! If you want help to correct your grammar, share your writing with a classmate or with me on Google Docs. We'll also talk about it in class next time!

I can't wait to hear about your hometowns! Do you have any questions about my hometown, Lake Geneva? Ask below in the comments and I'll be happy to answer!

  1. I'd love to go your hometown wifh my parents. It's better than visit to me in winter or spring(more peaceful). About how much the price in comparison with Korea? Jeong Yongmin, 2010210466

    1. It isn't very expensive to stay in my hometown, but it is very expensive to fly to the United States! Even though it is more peaceful in the winter and spring, I would still recommend visiting my hometown in the summer, however, because the lake is really clean and clear, so it's really wonderful to swim there! We do have skiing nearby in the winter, though, and we are very close to Chicago, where you can see the Art Institute of Chicago, which is one of the best art museums in the United States. What do you like to do on your vacations?

    2. If I have much money, I want to travel other places like your hometown. But now, I am low in my pocket, therefore, I will do part-time job in my vacation.

    3. I don't have enough money to travel very far right now either. I work at Dongguk during the vacation! I hope you'll be able to travel where you want to someday soon! My goal is to travel to Europe next summer. I haven't been there yet, and it's my dream.

    1. Well, it's my hometown, so I didn't have to spend money there. Some things are very cheap - hotels, food, and amusement are less expensive than in big cities. However, if you travel in Wisconsin you probably need to rent a car - so that is more expensive than traveling to a big city where you can take public transportation.I'm glad you are interested by my hometown! I am excited to learn about your hometown too!

    1. I don't usually fish, but I looked this up on the internet: "Fish include Panfish, Largemouth Bass, Smallmouth Bass, Northern Pike, Trout and Walleye." If you search for these on Google Images you can probably find pictures of them. I know a lot of people like to fish in Lake Geneva, and MANY people like to eat fish in Lake Geneva! :)

    2. Bass!!! This fish drawing feels very dynamic but, As far as I know bass taste not good....Do you eat bass??? and many people what kind of fish eat in Geneva!
I want know! What kind of eat a fish dish

      Delete
    3. Yeah, I'm not sure if bass tastes good either. Maybe it doesn't. I actually don't eat fish these days, because I'm a vegan (which means strict vegetarian). However, when I lived in Wisconsin I sometimes ate fish. I usually ate sushi, though! We had a Japanese restaurant in my town called the Tempura House, and I was a waitress there. Usually people in Wisconsin eat fish fry. This is a tradition from the Catholic religion. On Fridays Catholic people traditionally don't eat warm-blooded animals, but fish were okay to eat. Even though these days many people aren't Catholics, people still like to go out for fish fry. You can see pictures of some fish fry meals here: http://www.seriouseats.com/2014/05/guide-to-the-midwestern-fish-fry.html I'm not sure what people do with the fish they catch. Some of the bigger fish they make into a trophy. I'm sure people eat the trout, though!

    4. Are you vegan?? I didn't know...
It is a pity that you can't eat fish
I haven't know that Catholic's traditionally do not eat warm-blooded on friday. but now, I know it
So, I will recomend them to eat fish when I meet them on friday.
I saw some pictures of dishes made of fish at "Our Guide to the Friday Fish Fry in Wisconsin"
As I see the pictures, I felt appetite
iIf I have a chance, I will eat food which is similar to the pictures

    5. At Grazie Restaurant in Seonggeon-dong it's possible to eat Fish and Chips. That's more of a British style fried fish, but it might be the closest thing to fish fry in Gyeongju! This blog article tells about the restaurant, and there are directions at the end. The owner is very friendly! Many foreign professors from Dongguk eat there! http://gyeongjulove.blogspot.kr/2012/02/grazie-restaurant.html Alright! I'm finally going to bed! Have a good night!

    1. Hello, Yeo Jin! I hope you had a nice holiday! I hope you can have a chance to visit Lake Geneva too! It was a very peaceful place to grow up! My favorite place was actually the public library. It was about five blocks from my house, so I could walk there in 5 minutes. It was right next to the lake. You could sit in a comfy chair at the library and actually see the lake out the window. I'm happy, though, that I've had the chance to live in Korea and enjoy a different place!

    1. Hey Lee Kyu Ho! Nice to see you on here! Lake Geneva doesn't have a famous food, but Wisconsin (the state Lake Geneva is in) is famous for cheese and bratwurst. Bratwurst is a sausage which is originally from Germany. I don't eat meat these days, but I really loved bratwurst when I was young! Have you ever eaten a bratwurst? Do you like cheese?Fish fry is also popular - I talked about fish fry with another student in a different comment on the blog! I would be happy to guide you, but I don't know when I can visit my hometown again!

When I swim to swimmong pool, I feel relax and comfortable.
How much do you go to swim?

    3. I don't swim very often these days, because I also don't like swimming in the ocean that much. I don't mind the salt, but there are many jellyfish at the beach, and also, even though I know it's stupid, I worry about sharks sometimes! :) I prefer to swim in lakes.

    1. I'm not sure how long it takes exactly, but I think by plane it would take at least 16 hours, probably more. Most likely you would have to change planes several times! So it would be a long trip! There are several famous foods in Wisconsin (the state my hometown is in). Bratwursts and cheese are the two foods Wisconsin is most famous for. Bratwursts are a German food. They are a big and delicious sausage, originally from Germany. Many German immigrants moved to Wisconsin in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Cheese is also a very popular food. Wisconsin is called "the Dairy state." In America, every state has a slogan or a nickname like that. Illinois, a nearby state, is called "the land of Lincoln" because Abraham Lincoln lived there for many years and worked there as a lawyer. How about in Korea? Do different areas have nicknames like that? Also, what's the famous food in your hometown?

      Delete
    2. Like Gyeongju is "the capital of the silla dynasty"? And my hometown is nothing special famous food.

      Delete
    3. It would be more like "Beautiful Gyeongju" or "Gyeongju is Korea", which I see on cabs these days - more like a nickname. Here's a list of many state slogans. The most popular one is usually on the license plates of the cars. Also, I guess it's actually "America's Dairyland" for Wisconsin, not "The Dairy State" like I thought. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_U.S._state_nicknames

    1. I hope you get a chance to travel abroad! My hometown is pretty fun, but there are so many more famous places to go in the U.S.! If you ever visited my hometown, I recommend also visiting Chicago, Illinois, and Milwaukee and Madison, Wisconsin, which are nearby cities. The Midwest (that's the name for my part of the country, where Wisconsin is) has a reputation for being boring, but actually I think there are many interesting things to do there, and there's a lot of beautiful scenery.

In Korea, I think it's more common to swim near mountains, though. Have you ever swam in a river or stream near a mountain?
