Presentations: What makes a good presentation?

In the next 6-7 weeks we will spend a lot of time working on your presentations, which will be your final exam! Presentations are used to share knowledge and ideas with other people.

Presentations are really composed of two parts: 1. Preparation and 2. Performance. A good presentation should have both of these.

Preparation includes research and understanding your topic well. It also includes organizing your ideas and your slides. Good preparation makes your presentation informative and interesting and it really helps your performance. When you know your topic well, it's easier to speak clearly and have confidence.

Performance is also important. We talked about some tips for good performance in class this week, including speaking loudly and clearly, looking at the audience, smiling and using hand gestures. We will take some time in class to work on performance over the following weeks. Below is the video we watched in class this week, in case you would like to watch it again!

What do you think are the most important tips for making a good presentation? Have you ever seen a great presentation? What was the topic? If you have seen a great presentation or speech online, please share a link in the comments!

See everyone soon!

    1. I think in this case the English expression "practice makes perfect" is very true. Especially if you can practice in front of various different people, that can be very helpful. If you ever want to practice for me, you can come to the office too!

  7. Many people think 'without script' is the best. However in my case, speaker must have script because of correct information delivery. If speaker forget some sizes or number audience delivered wrong information.

    1. I think having a balance is the best - mainly you should be able to speak freely by practicing a lot, but you can have a card with some hard-to-remember facts written on it or you can put that information on your powerpoint so you can check it while you present! Accuracy is very important, but a script can sound dead and boring!

  8. I think the most important tips for making a good presentation are confidence and speaking clearly. But they are so difficult, so l think we need enough pratices to be familiar.

    1. I think that maybe sometimes you can seem serious or silent, but I also remember the lounge club from last semester, and I think you always did a very good job with acting and being very active in that situation. If you can act, I think you can definitely present well! If it is helpful, you can imagine that you are a character "Confident Presentation Man" ;) when you give your presentation!

    1. I think, yes, the more people practice, the better. I recommend practicing giving your presentation to several people before the final - to a friend or two, to your family, in the International Lounge class, or to me in the office! I am happy to listen to your presentation before the final!

  11. I accidently watched Harvard speech of Joanne K Rowling. I saw it interesting. The most impressive passage is " As is tale , so is life : not how long it is, but how good it is , is what matters."
